Last week we told you about Bigpoint’s eyebrow-raising sale of a €1,000 virtual space drone. Gamesbrief recently updated its news posting after its readers chimed in with a healthy dose of skepticism regarding the numbers involved in the supposed windfall. As it turns out, said numbers are likely still impressive, but rather less impressive than the €2 million ($2.7 million) initially surmised. Gamesbrief’s correction post states that the drone cannot be bought for real cash, and instead must be purchased with DarkOrbit’s Uridium currency, which is available for real money or earned in game. Bigpoint has in fact sold 2,000 of the drones, but not at a direct cost of €1,000 each. “I no longer think that you can multiply 2,000 10th Drones sold times €1,000 to work out how much revenue Bigpoint made from this single item,” Gamesbrief’s Nicholas Lovell writes.

For players, tradeable digital goods offer a way to monetize their gaming experience and make money from their virtual assets. This has led to the rise of a new breed of gamers known as “item farmers,” who spend hours grinding for rare items that they can sell for a profit. For developers, tradeable digital goods provide a new revenue stream and a way to incentivize players to spend more time and money in their games.
You can now stop, start and restart session hosts directly in the Azure portal. You can also choose whether to perform the operation on a single session host or on multiple session hosts in your host pool at the same time.

Digital finds for connoisseurs
This special issue of Visual Resources focuses on the role of women in the culture of connoisseurship during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Its nine articles provide further evidence for a known fact about the role of women in the art world of the time: the problem lies not in the historical lack of contributions, but in the historiographical silencing of women’s work and voices effected by the problematic gendering of modernity in the twentieth century. In fact, the lack of an academic discourse for art history in Britain until the 1930s entailed that connoisseurship was practiced mostly outside academia, which meant that women could develop their expertise in spite of having restricted access to universities. Our aim is not only to redress the gender imbalance in art historiography, but also to reassess the definition of connoisseurship as a “disseminated practice.” Rather than identifying connoisseurship with the act of attribution performed by one gifted individual, our authors put an emphasis on the culture of connoisseurship, intended as a web of expertise and professional networks. The flourishing of the art press and the empirical methods of scientific connoisseurship provided women with novel opportunities to earn critical authority in a disciplinary field that was still in the making.
And from Lehrman, never one to follow the herd, I gained the wisdom of not being afraid to “buy on bad news,” as he put it, by collecting artists or works I believe in even when they are out of favor in the market. “Don’t be afraid to buy art you love,” he would say, imploring me instead to think about the long arc of art history.

In recent years, Google Arts & Culture has been partnering with museums to bring iconic artworks to a global digital audience. Furthermore, blockchain projects such as MetaRembrandt and Appreciator.io’s Vincent van Gogh 39 collection exemplify this shift, offering a unique digital experience to a diverse audience.
